Keeping Your Emotions Within Your Grasp
Written By Gaurav Dhawan
Us humans are truly blessed with how we can feel and express emotions. We, unlike most other beings on the planet have evolved through the communication of thoughts, ideas, and emotions! However, these wonderful internal feelings also have another side to them that expresses our gloom and other not so nice feelings. Hence, emotions can prove to be quite taxing and often overwhelming. Moreover, there is no denying that in recent times all of us have been subjected to situations that none of us were ever prepared for.
2020 was a year where the whole world faced a crisis that has tested us and our ability to manage and control the emotions. For the first time we were isolated, and we were truly alone with our thoughts, there is no denying that sometimes these emotions get the better of us. Many individuals have suffered the consequences of these emotions in a rather negative way and thus Flawlessli you are here to help all our friends and family to deal with the issues and emotions that are in the way of us becoming the best versions of ourselves!
Here are a couple of ways by which you can try and control your emotions better!
Stop Suppressing Your Emotions!
First and foremost, we have to realise that emotions arise because we “feel” and feeling things is one of the most, if not the most, important aspect of our day to day lives. Instead of trying to control them or supress them it is better to manage them and feel them. Let them pass through you!
We have a tendency to appreciate only the happy endings and not the hardships that lead to those happy ending. However, it is when you start appreciating the moments of peril you will truly be able to manage them.
For instance, when you feel alone and deprived of attention, instead of trying to connect to an old person for momentary distraction that will take away the misery for a short period of time (will surely return that misery with added interest of guilt!) try focusing on the WHY! On why do you even need attention or why you feel the need of appreciation from anyone but yourself? Do not try to distract and supress the emotion that makes you feel sadder or miserable, instead tell yourself to feel it! And feel it through. For in words of John Green “Pain demands to be felt!”
Take a time out!
More often than not, when we feel overwhelmed by certain emotions, we forget to take a time out! Time-out is very crucial in order to identify and address the distress you are feeling with the overwhelming activity that’s taking place inside of your consciousness.
The easiest way to ensure a time-out is to take a deep breath or count till ten.
If your emotions are tilted towards anger and rage, I personally find that trying to focus on warm bright things in the room and drinking a glass of water helps the most!
Reassuring yourself about perception of fear!
Long ago in conversation with my own psychologist I discovered that anxiety and emotional stress often stems from our perception of danger. It is our mind telling and preparing for something that might happen! Or something that might be happening. Again, it is important to understand that, feeling that rush of anxiety or restlessness is not bad as it is a normal brain function. However, you have to remind yourself that most often it is just a perception. The thing or the outcome that has not even happened or probably will not happen! Hence, it’s a false fear like a fire safety drill. Always remember! There is no fire!
Talk!
One of the most important aspect that we forget about feelings is, they can be moderated once they are openly addressed! So, communicate, talk it out with your friends, family, therapist, and if none of those are available, we at Flawlessli you will always be just a click away to listen without any judgement 🙂
To conclude, if you are a fan of Pixar and Disney movies than you must have been familiar with the movie inside out and the beautiful message it had for us all! ALL FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS ARE IMPORTANT TO ENJOY LIFE.
